Pre-Conference Workshops

Student with his host family

Attendees at WISE 2014 have the option of registering for a pre-conference workshop that relates to the conference theme.

Dr. Michael Vande Berg will lead a full-day workshop entitled “From Theory & Research to Practice: A Workshop for Intercultural Skills Enhancement” on Wednesday February 5, 2014.

Content: Faculty and staff are increasingly asking what we can do to maximize our students’ learning when they study abroad. This train-the-trainer workshop is designed to respond in concrete ways to that question. Grounded in developmental and experiential learning theory, it focuses on the development of four skills that students need to develop in order to become more interculturally competent—skills that will allow them to interact more effectively and appropriately with culturally different others. Participants will come away from this workshop with a set of activities to use in their own teaching and training, and with enhanced skills to use them effectively.

The workshop will begin at 8:00 am with an informal continental breakfast, and he formal presentation will begin at 9:00 am. The workshop will end at approximately 5:00 pm. The workshop registration fee includes lunch on Wednesday, February 5, coffee service and snacks, plus the cost of two inventories (the IDI and Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory) that will be part of the presentation.

Individuals interested in participating in this pre-conference workshop must register for it, separate from the WISE 2014 conference. This workshop will be limited to 25 participants. The cost of this workshop is $300.00 if registration is completed by December 9, 2013 (early bird rate), and $340.00 if registration is completed on or after December 10, 2013 (regular rate). Visit the Registration page for more information about the registration process.
